2001 LA Watts Summer Games First Rounds Result
in Exciting Finals Line-Up for June 9 & 10
Los Angeles - The exciting first weekend of the
34th Annual LA Watts Summer Games set the tone for next weekends
finals in boys and girls basketball, soccer, tennis as well as
boys waterpolo, girls volleyball, baseball, and softball. The
400 person wrestling and cheerleading competitions, and track
and field are also on the schedule for the finals weekend.
Both boys and girls basketball reached the final
16 with a winner from each of the 16 high school host sites. Boys
and Girls teams will continue on at Locke and Jefferson High schools
respectively to vie for semifinal standings on June 9. Finals
will be held at LA Southwest College on June 10
Girls waterpolo concluded with San Gorgonio, a 6-2
winner over Eisenhower. Holly Kiezer of San Gorgonio received
the MVP while Carrie Davis from 7th place Oxnard was presented
with the Sportsmanship Award.
Alhambra, Gardena, La Quinta and Locke and Carson
Westchester, Arlington and Long Beach Wilson made the semifinals
for baseball on the 9th at LA Southwest College and will compete
for championship slots on the 10th.

The LA Watts Summer Games is the largest high school
athletic competition in the nation with 7,000 participants. The
Games draw 420 high school teams from 116 California communities
and are put on by 3 full-time staff and thousands of volunteers.
The Games will return to LA Southwest College, Cerritos College,
and Locke and Jordan high schools on June 9 and 10. June 10 will
also feature all awards ceremonies, entertainment, a barbecue,
prizes and special appearances. The Games are founded by the Los
Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce and are free and open to the
