L.A. Watts Summer Games Enters Second Weekend with Exciting Lineup
LOS
ANGELES - If last weekends games were any indication of this
weekends lineup, get ready for some fierce competition. The
2003 L.A. Watts Summer Games wrapped up preliminary competitions,
and will continue to semis and finals on June 21 and 22.
The basketball tournament started the weekend with heated competition.
Powerhouse Fairfax easily took its bracket, winning by almost thirty
points each game. Dominguez stepped in to take all four games on
Sunday, beating Dorsey by four points to win the bracket. Dominguez
will advance to the quarterfinals and take on Fairfax in the single
elimination third round. Cabrillo, Verbum Dei, South Gate, Carson,
Loyola, and Inglewood will all take the court on Saturday, June
21st at Locke High School to compete for the right to advance to
the semi-finals at LA Southwest College on Sunday. In girls hoops,
Lynwood breezed through the winners bracket to beat University
by an easy 15 points to advance to the quarterfinals. Lynwood will
vie for the right to defend the title against Sylmar, LB Poly, Muir,
West Torrance, Millikan, and Carson, also to be played at Locke
High School on Saturday.
In football, two teams from LA City Sections top ten, Birmingham
and Franklin, led the pack as they both won all four games on Saturday
and Sunday. Hawthorne, last years third place winner, will
face tough competition as it tries to reclaim one of the top three
spots in the tournament.
New to the schedule for this weekend are wrestling, with 400 athletes,
and track & field, with 200 athletes. Other festivities at LA
Southwest College include a Games Expo filled with interactive games,
sponsor booths, prizes and giveaways. Finals Day will be held at
L.A. Southwest College on June 22, featuring awards ceremonies,
and special appearances by a former player of the Los Angeles Dodgers,
and Nate Evans (former lead singer for the legendary Temptations).
The L.A. Watts Summer Games, a program of the Los Angeles Junior
Chamber of Commerce, is the largest high school athletic competition
in the nation with more than 7,000 participants, and draws 400 high
